The Mongol Empire, initially named the Great Mongol State, was a large empire that existed during the 13th and 14th centuries. Beginning in the Central Asian steppes, it eventually stretched from Eastern Europe to the Sea of Japan, covering large parts of Siberia in the north and extending southward into Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and the Middle East. It is commonly referred to as the largest contiguous empire in the history of the world. At its greatest extent it spanned 9,700 km (6,000 mi), covered an area of 24,000,000 km² (9,300,000 sq mi), 16% of the Earth's total land area, and held sway over a population of 100 million.

By contrast the only empire to surpass the Mongol Empire in size was the British Empire, which at its height, it was the largest empire in history and, for over a century, was the foremost global power. By 1922 the British Empire held sway over about 458 million people, one-fifth of the world's population at the time, and covered more than 33,700,000 km² (13,012,000 sq mi), almost a quarter of the Earth's total land area.

Once again at Black Rose this week a busy crowd gathered for the East Side's ultimate pub quiz. 46 people on thirteen teams battled for the prizes up for grabs.

It was tight at the top but sneaking in with a 43 point score was Vodka Tartletts who were named champions on the evening...

Second place saw I jizzed on your girls face, check her cumplexion battle for the runners up position as a tie ensued among two other teams. But they came out on top in the end with their sudden death answer being closest....

They won a $25 bar tab and the pleasure of having their picture taken. Oh snap! That's @T_Todd and @gbloho15! Sneaky...

to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel and survive!

Annie Edson Taylor (October 24, 1838 – April 29, 1921) was an American adventurer who, on her 63rd birthday, October 24, 1901, became the first person to survive a trip over Niaga ra Falls in a barrel.

In October 1829, Sam Patch, who called himself "the Yankee Leapster", jumped from a high tower into the gorge below the falls and survived; this began a long tradition of daredevils trying to go over the falls. On October 24, 1901, 63-year-old Michigan school teacher Annie Edson Taylor was the first person to go over the falls in a barrel as a publicity stunt; she survived, bleeding, but virtually unharmed. Soon after exiting the barrel, she said, "No one ought ever do that again."Previous to Taylor's own attempt, on October 19 a domestic cat named Iagara was sent over the Horseshoe Falls in her barrel to test its strength. Contrary to rumours at the time, the cat survived the plunge unharmed and later was posed with Taylor in photographs. Since Taylor's historic ride, 14 other people have intentionally gone over the falls in or on a device, despite her advice. Some have survived unharmed, but others have drowned or been severely injured. Survivors of such stunts face charges and stiff fines, as it is illegal, on both sides of the border, to attempt to go over the falls.

A tough quiz featuring a bonus wager round graced the Black Rose Irish Pub this week, with a smashing attendance of 46 Quizzers on 11 teams.

With the quiz out of a possible 60 points, there were a range of big scores on the night!

First place went to the supreme quiz unit that is Chumba Wumba from Chamaica with 57 points!

Damn, that's even good for our standard! They won a $50 bar tab for the win, good hustle people.

To decide second place, we brought out our Sudden Death question!

How many different jobs did Homer hold during the first 400 episodes of The Simpsons?

The time was up and the cards were in, we had the following answers.

Best known by his nickname "Machine Gun Kelly,"
he spent 17 years as an inmate at Alcatraz

George Kelley Barnes (July 18, 1895 – July 18, 1954), better known as "Machine Gun Kelly", was an American gangster during the prohibition era. His nickname came from his favorite weapon, a Thompson submachine gun. His most famous crime was the kidnapping of oil tycoon & businessman Charles Urschel in July 1933 for which he, and his gang, earned $200,000 ransom. The FBI investigation eventually led to Kelly's arrest in Memphis, Tennessee on September 26, 1933. His crimes also included bootlegging and armed robbery.

Machine Gun Kelly spent his remaining 21 years in prison. During his time at Alcatraz he got the nickname "Pop Gun Kelly." This was in reference, according to a former prisoner, to the fact that Kelly was a model prisoner and was nowhere near the tough, brutal gangster his wife made him out to be. He spent 17 years on Alcatraz, working in the prison industries, and was quietly transferred back to Leavenworth in 1951. He died of a heart attack at Leavenworth Federal Prison, Kansas on July 18, 1954, his 59th birthday. He is buried at Cottondale Texas Cemetery with a small headstone marked "George B. Kelley 1954".

Quizmaster Sam returned to The Black Rose Irish Pub this week to kick off quiz night at 9pm.

It was a busy evening with ten teams and over forty players!

Top dogs of the game were league contenders Vodka Tartletts with a crushing 46 points...

The won a $50 for first place!

That's a seriously furry red jacket you've got there buddy!

Second place went to Plan "C" Coathanger who missed out on first by just one point!

They won a $25 bar tab nonetheless.

We were skeptical of this team at first, as one of the members is a Tottenham Hotspur fan.

Infidel!!

However, they won second place fair and square.

Eric Arthur Blair (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950), better known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English author and journalist. Charles Elwood "Chuck" Yeager (born February 13, 1923) is a retired major general in the United States Air Force and noted test pilot. He was the first pilot to travel faster than sound (1947). Originally retiring in 1975 as a brigadier general, Yeager was promoted to major general on the Air Force's retired list in 2005 for his military achievements.

His career began in World War II as a private in the United States Army Air Forces. After serving as an aircraft mechanic, in September 1942 he entered enlisted pilot training and upon graduation was promoted to the rank of flight officer (the World War II USAAF equivalent to warrant officer) and became a North American P-51 Mustang fighter pilot. After the war he became a test pilot of many kinds of aircraft and rocket planes. Yeager was the first man to break the sound barrier on October 14, 1947, flying the experimental Bell X-1 at Mach 1 at an altitude of 45,000 ft (13,700 m). Although Scott Crossfield was the first man to fly faster than Mach 2 in 1953, Yeager shortly thereafter set a new record of Mach 2.44. He later commanded fighter squadrons and wings in Germany and in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, and in recognition of the outstanding performance ratings of those units he then was promoted to brigadier general. Yeager's flying career spans more than 60 years and has taken him to every corner of the globe, including the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War.

Final quiz of the year! New League Gets Underway!

Quizmaster originale Ryan stepped in to host at the Black Rose Irish Pub on Milwaukee's east side this Wednesday night, as regular QM Sam remains in England for the New Year.

And it was a thrilling night of quizzin' in the end as eleven teams were involved to stand supreme for the final quiz of 2011.

Ultimately, the winners came in the shape and form of long-standing Quizmaster veterans Before the Afterbirth...

One of the few Milwaukee quiz teams that can saw they were there in the land of Shorewood, in the fires of the Britinn, were the Dark Lord Quizmaster forged in secret, a master quiz, to control all other quizzes.... basically, they quizzed at the original Britinn, where Quizmaster begun in 2006!

Good to see them still at it, and still #Winning!

Second place was stolen by Dutch Rudders who finished just one point above third place to take away the $25 tab...

With two players the money goes a lot further!

And finally, Quizmaster gave an honorable mention to the lovely ladies of Team Killin' Bitches, who were getting all the help they could muster from the QM as well as other various Black Rose employees during the quiz...

We hope to see them back in 2012!

The Times Square Ball is a time ball dropped each year during the New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square, Manhattan, New York City. The ball is made by Waterford Crystal and electric lights is raised to the top of a pole on the One Times Square building at 6:00 pm and then lowered to mark the coming of the New Year. The ball descends 77 feet (23 m) over the course of a minute, coming to rest at the bottom of its pole at midnight, and a sign lights up with the digits of the new year, as the ball's lights turn off. Toshiba's Times Square advertising screen directly below the ball counts down to midnight as well alongside several other billboards in the area.

Every year up to one million people gather in Times Square to watch the ball drop, and an estimated 1 billion watch the video of the event, 100 million of them in the United States.

The first New Year's Eve celebration in the area was held in 1904. The New York Times newspaper had opened their new headquarters on Longacre Square (the city's second tallest building), and persuaded the city to rename the triangular "square" surrounding it for the newspaper. The newspaper's owner, Adolph Ochs, decided to celebrate the move with a midnight fireworks show on the building for New Year's Eve. Close to 200,000 attended the event, displacing celebrations held at Trinity Church. However, Adolph wanted a bigger spectacular at the building to draw more attention to the square — in 1907, the paper's chief electrician Walter F. Palmer constructed a lit ball that would be lowered from a flagpole at One Times Square. It was constructed with iron and wood, was lit with one hundred 25-watt bulbs, weighed 700 pounds (320 kg) and measured 5 feet (1.5 m) in diameter. At first, it dropped 1 second after midnight. Even after the Times moved its headquarters to 229 W. 43rd St., the celebration continued.

Quizmas Comes Early! League Championship Showdown!

It was league finale time at the Black Rose this Wednesday before Christmas, and a hectic and energized crowd came out to try their luck at earning some of the $150 in bar tabs that the bar was handing out on the night.

On the top of the table for the night with a score of 46 out of 50 possible points it was Mr Wu & The Adjustments!

No daddy-Dyce this week, and they still won?! They would take the $50 bar tab. And with prior league leaders We Don't Do Coke, We Just Like the Smell of It not showing up for the big showdown on the night, that paved the way for the Wu to take another league title at the Rose.

That's 8 championships at the Black Rose for them now!

We don't do coke... would have taken second in the league, but Quizmaster rules state you have to be present on the night to accept the bar tab prize. So Chumba Wumba from Chamaica, finishing in third were next in line for the prize, but they were also absent!

Phew.. so finally, in 4th place which turned into 2nd place league finish with 260 points it was Vodka Tartletts!

In second place on the night, with 45 out of 50 possible points, it was The Muff Rangers... The only white Christmas will be on your Mom's chest.

Congrats on the $25 win!

And one last thing... there was a guest from Minneapolis who is a trivia host for Trivia Mafia in the twin cities, so we figured we'd give them a shout out...

It's a Wonderful Life is a 1946 American Christmas drama film produced and directed by Frank Capra and based on the short story "The Greatest Gift" written by Philip Van Doren Stern.

The film stars James Stewart as George Bailey, a man whose imminent suicide on Christmas Eve brings about the intervention of his guardian angel, Clarence Odbody (Henry Travers). Clarence shows George all the lives he has touched and the contributions he has made to his community.

Despite initially being considered a box office flop due to high production costs and stiff competition at the time of its release, the film has come to be regarded as a classic and a staple of Christmas television around the world. Theatrically, the film's break-even point was actually $6.3 million, approximately twice the production cost, a figure it never came close to achieving in its initial release. An appraisal in 2006 reported: "Although it was not the complete box-office failure that today everyone believes ... it was initially a major disappointment and confirmed, at least to the studios, that Capra was no longer capable of turning out the populist features that made his films the must-see, money-making events they once were."

League Finale Next Week!!! It's Gonna Be a Close One!

This past Wednesday at Black Rose Irish Pub saw Quizmaster Sam return to host trivia at 9pm sharp, ready to unleash a killer house playlist to queeps.

And we had an interesting Bonus Wager Round on the night that totaled the scores to a possible 60 points. A tight contest between ten teams lead to a tie breaker at the top between two teams who both reached a high of 52 points.

So sudden death it was!

The tie break question: Convicted of 15 life-terms in 1991, how many years was serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer sentenced to serve in prison?

Incest... answered: 1425
Vodka Tartletts answered: 600

The correct answer was 957 years. That's a long time to be locked up! This meant that Vodka Tartletts were first place winners!

A $50 bar tab was all theirs.

This left second place and a $25 bar tab to Incest... A Game The Whole Family Can Play!

Remember though, dad always wins!

The quizzical saga continues at 9pm next week for the league finale! Quizmaster Sam is jetting off back to England for a couple of weeks, so Kevin will be stepping in to round off the league.

The Ford Model T (colloquially known as the Tin Lizzie, Flivver, T‑Model Ford, or T) is an automobile that was produced by Henry Ford's Ford Motor Company from September 1908 to May 1927.^[1] It is generally regarded as the first affordable automobile, the car that opened travel to the common middle-class American; some of this was because of Ford's innovations, including assembly line production instead of individual hand crafting. The Ford Model T was named the world's most influential car of the 20th century in an international poll.

The Model T set 1908 as the historic year that the automobile became popular. The first production Model T was produced on August 12, 1908 and left the factory on September 27, 1908, at the Piquette Plant in Detroit, Michigan. On May 26, 1927, Henry Ford watched the 15 millionth Model T Ford roll off the assembly line at his factory in Highland Park, Michigan.

There were several cars produced or prototyped by Henry Ford from the founding of the company in 1903 until the Model T came along. Although he started with the Model A, there were not 19 production models (A through T); some were only prototypes. The production model immediately before the Model T was the Model S, an upgraded version of the company's largest success to that point, the Model N. The follow-up was the Ford Model A and not the Model U. It was a full house at Black Rose on Wednesday night as 8 teams came out to say hi to QM Kevin who was stepping in for QM Sam on the week. And with QM Kevin's appearance came some great quiz scores as all the teams were higher than 38 points and within 6 points of each other (although it could have been the ridiculously difficult music clip bonus round that kept the scores close!).

The top of the table saw a tie which meant that two teams would battle it out in sudden death to determine the $50 winner. The question:

In which year did London become the first world city to host licensed taxicabs?

Sandusky for Heisman! (we don't do cocaine, we just like the smell of it) answered 1940...

But ultimately they would fall just short to Vodka Tartletts who's answer of 1880 was closest to the correct answer of 1897...

The Blue Marble is a famous photograph of the Earth taken on December 7, 1972, by the crew of the Apollo 17 spacecraft at a distance of about 45,000 kilometres (28,000 mi).

The name also has been applied by NASA to a modern series of image data sets covering the entire globe at relatively high resolution, created by carefully sifting through satellite captured sequences taken over time, to eliminate as much cloud cover as possible from the collated set of images.

The snapshot — taken by astronauts on December 7, 1972, at 5:39 a.m. EST (10:39 UTC) — is likely one of the most widely distributed photographic images in existence. The image is one of the few to show a fully illuminated Earth, as the astronauts had the Sun behind them when they took the image. To the astronauts, Earth had the appearance of a glass marble (hence the name).

The photograph was taken about 5 hours and 6 minutes after launch of the Apollo 17 mission, and about 1 hour 54 minutes after the spacecraft left parking orbit around the Earth to begin its trajectory to the Moon. The time of Apollo 17's launch, 12:33 a.m. EST, meant that Africa was in daylight during the early hours of the spacecraft's flight. With the December solstice approaching, Antarctica also was illuminated.

The Muff Winners!

With a house of 48 players at the Black Rose this past Wednesday, it was a jam packed evening of competitive pub trivia. Quizmaster Sam kicked off the show with some "banging" tunes at 9pm and proceeded to quizthe patrons for the duration of the thirty questions!

After spending much of her childhood in foster homes, Monroe began a career as a model, which led to a film contract in 1946. Thanksgiving Day is a holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada. Thanksgiving is celebrated each year on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. Thanksgiving in Canada falls on the same day as Columbus Day in the United States. Because of the longstanding traditions of the holiday, the celebration often extends to the weekend that falls closest to the day it is celebrated.

Thanksgiving in North America had originated from a mix of European and Native traditions. Typically in Europe, festivals were held before and after the harvest cycles to give thanks for a good harvest, and to rejoice together after much hard work with the rest of the community. At the time, Native Americans had also celebrated the end of a harvest season. When Europeans first arrived to the Americas, they brought with them their own harvest festival traditions from Europe, celebrating their safe voyage, peace and good harvest. Though the origins of the holiday in both Canada and the United States are similar, Americans do not typically celebrate the contributions made in Newfoundland, while Canadians do not celebrate the contributions made in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

In the West African country of Liberia, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the first Thursday of November. It's the only country in Africa to celebrate the holiday.

Nine teams participated in trivia this past Wednesday at Black Rose with 37 players in attendance.

A food and drink bonus round proved to test the drinking knowledge of the patrons, who insisted TEN cups are used in beer pong not six... We didn't realize your were such hardcore drinkers!

And as the league continued it brought back Mr Wu & The Adjustments who finished in first place this week!

They won a $50 bar tab for the victory!

The Abraj Al-Bait Towers, also known as the Mecca Royal Hotel Clock Tower, is a building complex in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The complex holds several world records, including the tallest hotel in the world, the tallest clock tower in the world, the world's largest clock face, and the world's largest building floor area. The complex's hotel tower will become the second tallest building in the world upon its completion in 2011, surpassed only by Dubai's Burj Khalifa. The building complex is meters away from the world's largest mosque and Islam's most sacred site, the Masjid al Haram. The developer and contractor of the complex is the Saudi Binladin Group, the Kingdom's largest construction company.

The hotel tower is topped by a four-faced clock, visible from more than 25 kilometres (16 miles) away, which is the largest clock in the world. The clock will dwarf London's Big Ben, once the largest four-faced clock in the world, as well as the current title holder, the Allen-Bradley Clock Tower in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The dials are more than five times greater in area. The clock's face is also bigger than the current world champion at the Cevahir Mall clock in Istanbul, which has a 36-metre (118-foot) face with 3-metre-high (9.8-foot) digits set in the transparent roof of the shopping complex.

One final reminder that Milwaukee's biggest pub trivia tournament, Quizmaster Cup VI, is this upcoming Sunday November 13th, and there are just a few spots left! Register now to reserve your team's table!...

This week at Black Rose Quizmaster Sam returned to host trivia at 9pm! With nine teams participating it was a busy night indeed.

Top of the charts this week was Chumba Wumba from Chamaica with a whopping 46 points out of 50...

They're just unstoppable! A $50 bar tab was all theirs.

Elsewhere on the evening we saw the return of Running Jorts who finally came back to the Black Rose after an all-too-long hiatus. They finished up with 40 points in the end. Not bad girls.

Finally, second place was going to be a test of two team's sudden death skills, as a tie ensued for the runners-up spot.

Proving their worth for second place ultimately was The Muff Rangers cum to Penn State who finished up with 45 points...

Phillip Harvey "Phil" Spector (born Harvey Phillip Spector on December 26, 1939) is an American record producer and songwriter, later known for his conviction in the murder of actress Lana Clarkson.

The originator of the "Wall of Sound" production technique, Spector was a pioneer of the 1960s girl-group sound and produced over 25 Top 40 hits in 1960–1965. After this initial success, Spector later worked with artists including Ike and Tina Turner, John Lennon, George Harrison, and the Ramones with similar acclaim. He produced The Beatles' Academy Award winning album Let It Be, and the Grammy Award–winning Concert for Bangladesh by former Beatle George Harrison. In 1989, Spector was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer. The 1965 song "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", produced and co-written by Spector for The Righteous Brothers, is listed by BMI as the song with the most U.S. airplay in the 20th century.

The 2003 shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson in his Alhambra, California home led to his 2009 conviction of murder in the second degree. He is serving a prison sentence of 19 years to life.

Wednesday night meant quiz night returned to the Black Rose this week, with a new quiz league also getting underway following The Vodka Tartletts being crowned champs at last week's league finale.

And with nine teams participating this week, things got off to a flying start with 42 players delving straight in and testing their quiz skills (whilst drinking, that is.)

It most certainly was an interesting night as we saw the return of Milwaukee pub quiz veterans Mr Wu & The Adjustments - one of few team to win quiz league at multiple Milwaukee pubs. Evidently a wee-bit rusty, they took second spot in the end...

In their defense, they claimed it was a bad night for them too! We'll certainly see some adjustments to the league of the Black Rose over the next 8 weeks, we would think!

Will they make a triumphant return to Quizmaster Cup VI next Sunday?!

First place however went to Black Rose trivia pros Chumba Wumba from Chamaica who showed their quizzical powers after taking runners-up spot last week....

Little Big Man is a 1970 American Western film directed by Arthur Penn and based on the 1964 comic novel by Thomas Berger. It is a picaresque comedy about a Caucasian boy raised by the Cheyenne nation during the 19th century. The film is largely concerned with contrasting the lives of American pioneers and Native Americans throughout the progression of the boy's life.

The movie stars Dustin Hoffman, Chief Dan George, Faye Dunaway, Martin Balsam, Jeff Corey and Richard Mulligan. It is considered a revisionist Western, with Native Americans receiving a more sympathetic treatment and United States Cavalry soldiers depicted as villains.

Hoffman holds the record for portraying the greatest age span of a single character, playing Jack Crabb from the age of 17 to 121, a difference of 104 years. To obtain the hoarse voice of a 121-year-old man, Hoffman sat in his dressing room and screamed at the top of his lungs for an hour. The makeup for the ancient Crabb was created by Dick Smith from foam latex and included revolutionary false eyelids that could blink along with the actor's. Due to editing, and much to Smith's chagrin, no blinks were visible in the finished film. Of the makeup, Hoffman was quoted in Life as saying, "I defy you to put on that makeup and not feel old". The role of Chief Old Lodge Skins was initially offered to Marlon Brando, Paul Scofield and Laurence Olivier, all of whom turned it down. The Little Bighorn battle scenes were filmed on location in Montana near the actual battle site.

Finaaaaaale! (QM Cup Tickets Up for Grabs Now!)

Just a quick reminder that Quizmaster Cup VI, Milwaukee's pub trivia tournament, is coming November 13th, with online registration opening this Monday October 24th...

The final week of the current 8-week trivia league had arrived at The Black Rose this past Wednesday night, rounding off with a dramatic finish on the evening.

And with 12 teams and 49 people playing the game, it was destined to be a big finish!

Four prizes were to be given out on the night, but interestingly enough only two teams would be winning the prizes...

Showing their sudden death tekkers and winning the quiz in the end was Vodka Tartletts with 53 points out a possible 65!

They were also the winners of our league meaning they won a total a $100 in bar tabs on the night!

Cash, money, hoes, all a QM knows!

The runners up in the quiz on the night also doubled up as the runners up in our quiz league, bringing Chumba Wumba from Chamaica's bar tab total to $50...

Erwin Johannes Eugen Rommel (15 November 1891 – 14 October 1944), popularly known as the Desert Fox (Wüstenfuchs), was a German Field Marshal of World War II. He won the respect of both his own troops and the enemies he fought.

He was a highly decorated officer in World War I, and was awarded the Pour le Mérite for his exploits on the Italian front. In World War II, he further distinguished himself as the commander of the 7th Panzer Division during the 1940 invasion of France. However, it was his leadership of German and Italian forces in the North African campaign that established the legend of the Desert Fox. He is considered to have been one of the most skilled commanders of desert warfare in the war. He later commanded the German forces opposing the Allied cross-channel invasion in Normandy.

As one of the few generals who consistently fought the Western Allies (he was never assigned to the Eastern Front), Rommel is regarded as having been a humane and professional officer. His Afrikakorps was never accused of war crimes. Soldiers captured during his Africa campaign were reported to have been treated humanely. Furthermore, he ignored orders to kill captured commandos, Jewish soldiers and civilians in all theaters of his command.

Late in the war, Rommel was linked to the conspiracy to kill Adolf Hitler. Because Rommel was widely renowned, Hitler chose to eliminate him quietly; in trade for assurances his family would be spared, Rommel agreed to commit suicide.

Franz Ferdinand (18 December 1863 – 28 June 1914) was an Archduke of Austria-Este, Austro-Hungarian and Royal Prince of Hungary and of Bohemia, and from 1889 until his death, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne. His assassination in Sarajevo precipitated Austria-Hungary's declaration of war against Serbia. This caused the Central Powers (including Germany and Austria-Hungary) and the Allies of World War I (countries allied with Serbia) to declare war on each other, starting World War I.

He was born in Graz, Austria, the eldest son of Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria (younger brother of Franz Joseph and Maximilian) and of his second wife, Princess Maria Annunciata of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. When he was only twelve years old, his cousin Duke Francis V of Modena died, naming Franz Ferdinand his heir on condition that he add the name Este to his own. Franz Ferdinand thus became one of the wealthiest men in Austria.

No Quiz at the Black Rose Tonight (Oct 12th)

There will be no quiz at the Black Rose Irish Pub on Milwaukee's East Side tonight, Wednesday October 12th, 2011, as the bar looks to focus on the Brewers NLCS game 3 versus the St. Louis Cardinals.

The quiz, slated for its usual 9 p.m. start, will be canceled to allow Milwaukee sports fans to indulge in what they hope to be another win for the Brew Crew. The first pitch for the game will be thrown at 7:30 p.m. Quizmaster encourages regulars and sports fans alike to stop by the Black Rose to enjoy unique game-day specials of $2 Miller Lite Taps, $2 Brewer Bombs, & FREE Shots whenever the Brewers score a run!

The White House is the official residence and principal workplace of the president of the United States. Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., the house was designed by Irish-born James Hoban, and built between 1792 and 1800 of white-painted Aquia sandstone in the Neoclassical style. It has been the residence of every U.S. president since John Adams. When Thomas Jefferson moved into the house in 1801, he (with architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe) expanded the building outward, creating two colonnades that were meant to conceal stables and storage.

In 1814, during the War of 1812, the mansion was set ablaze by the British Army in the Burning of Washington, destroying the interior and charring much of the exterior. Reconstruction began almost immediately, and President James Monroe moved into the partially reconstructed house in October 1817.

Because of crowding within the executive mansion itself, President Theodore Roosevelt had all work offices relocated to the newly constructed West Wing in 1901. Eight years later, President William Howard Taft expanded the West Wing and created the first Oval Office which was eventually moved as the section was expanded. The third-floor attic was converted to living quarters in 1927 by augmenting the existing hip roof with long shed dormers.

A newly constructed East Wing was used as a reception area for social events; Jefferson's colonnades connected the new wings. East Wing alterations were completed in 1946, creating additional office space. By 1948, the house's load-bearing exterior walls and internal wood beams were found to be close to failure. Under Harry S. Truman, the interior rooms were completely dismantled and a new internal load-bearing steel frame constructed inside the walls.

In 2007, it was ranked second on the American Institute of Architects list of "America's Favorite Architecture".

Quizmaster Sam discovered that Twitter can be an evil tool this week as he realized there were some sneaky followers in the house on the night. We Don't Do Foreplay - Don't get on a plane Dec 21st to London :) won a $50 bar tab for first place and their creepy knowledge on the Quizmaster's flight details!....

Sam better watch what is tweeted from now on so these guys don't follow him to London! :)

We really did enjoy the effort from quiz duo Double D and Up on the evening, who fell in last place with a respectable 42 points. Hope to see you again next time!

A special territory of Chile that was annexed in 1888, Easter Island is famous for its 887 extant monumental statues, called moai, created by the early Rapanui people. It is a World Heritage Site (as determined by UNESCO) with much of the island protected within Rapa Nui National Park. In recent times the island has served as a warning of the cultural and environmental dangers of overexploitation. Ethnographers and archaeologists also blame diseases carried by European colonizers and slave raiding of the 1860s for devastating the local peoples.

Easter Island is claimed to be the most remote inhabited island in the world.

The name "Easter Island" was given by the island's first recorded European visitor, the Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen, who encountered it on Easter Sunday 1722, while searching for Davis or David's island. Roggeveen named it Paasch-Eyland (18th century Dutch for "Easter Island"). The island's official Spanish name, Isla de Pascua, also means "Easter Island".

Trivia at the Black Rose this week kicked off at 9pm with a packed audience of 50 people participating, all buzzing to test their drinkin' and thinkin' abilities for the usual prizes.

The music clips bonus round certainly rounded off the evening on a high, especially with the classic tune of My Sharona!

A tight contest resulted in a tie at the top between two teams which lead to a heated sudden death.

We posed the following question: In which year did the first gasoline-powered car debut in the United States in Springfield, Massachusetts?

Muff Rangers guessed: 1897

Coming out on top as champs was The Muff Rangers - We T-Bagged this quiz like we T-Bagged the Red Coats....

The group of six were delighted to be back on top dominating trivia at the Rose. A $50 bar tab was all theirs.

Giles Corey (also spelled Cory or Coree, c. 1611 – September 19, 1692) was a prosperous farmer and full member of the church in early colonial America who died under judicial torture during the Salem witch trials. Corey refused to enter a plea, and was crushed to death by stone weights in an attempt to force him to do so. In April 1692, he was accused by Ann Putnam, Jr., Mercy Lewis, and Abigail Williams of witchcraft. Ann Putnam Jr claimed that on April 13, the specter of Giles Corey visited her and asked her to write in the Devil's book. Later, Putnam also claimed that a ghost appeared before her to announce that it had been murdered by Corey. Other girls were to describe Corey as "a dreadful wizard" and recount stories of assaults by his specter. Corey's last words were "more weight."

Giles Corey was arrested on April 18, 1692, along with Mary Warren, Abigail Hobbs, and Bridget Bishop. The following day, they were examined by the authorities, during which Abigail Hobbs confessed to Giles being a warlock.

Corey refused to plead (guilty or not guilty), was committed to jail and subsequently arraigned at the September sitting of the court.

According to the law at the time, a person who refused to plead could not be tried. To avoid persons cheating justice, the legal remedy for refusing to plead was "peine forte et dure". In this process the prisoner is stripped naked, with a heavy board laid on their body. Then rocks or boulders are laid on the plank of wood. This was the process of being pressed.

There were ten teams at Black Rose this week ready to indulge in an entertaining night of trivia shenanigans and heavy drinking!

We certainly appreciated the legendary Wesley Snipes/Blade team name that delighted all on the evening, in the shape and form of Cock Juggling Thunder Cunt. They certainly would have won best team name prize if that had existed at the Black Rose.

Following up the rear with 31 points was newcomers Team KP. We can only assume this stands for the deliciously desirable Katy Perry, a dear favorite of Quizmaster Sam's.

Elsewhere, a sudden death ensued on the evening following a tie in second place on 43 points....

Three teams were battling for second place, all having to ponder how old President Gerald Ford was when he died in 2006. With their guess of 91 years old, The Muff Rangers... I pull so much tail cuz I talk like Harry Potter were declared winners!...

The boys were pleased to seal the win and a $25 bar tab. And yes, talking like Harry Potter has it's advantages.

named for the Norweigian

Axel Paulsen (1855-1938) was a Norwegian figure skater and speed skater. He is the inventor of the figure skating Axel jump.

Paulsen first publicly executed the Axel jump in 1882 at the World Championships in Vienna while wearing speed skates. At the Vienna World Championships Paulsen won both the speed skating and fancy (figure) skating events becoming the World Champion.

In the winter of 1883 Paulsen went to North America to participate in a series of skating events. On February 8, 1883 a race was held at the open air rink in Washington Park, Brooklyn, New York. Paulsen defeated 17 picked skaters, the fastest from Norway, Canada, England and the United States and set the following records at the race:

1 mile: 3 minutes, 34 3/5 seconds
5 miles: 19 minutes, 10 seconds
10 miles: 39 minutes, 7 3/5 seconds

Paulsen was a professional skater competing in races and meets that offered the winners prize purses and metals; he was the World Professional Speed Skating Champion from 1882 to 1889. He lost the title on February 1, 1890 to Canadian professional speed skating champion Hugh J. McCormick at a 3-race meet in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

It's a Trivia Love Fiesta...

It was a busy one at Black Rose this week, with forty players testing their knowledge for some delightful prizes on the night. The clock struck 9 p.m. and we were in full swing with the quiz bringing a great atmosphere to the patrons.

It was a very tight contest amongst the ten teams on the night, with the top seven teams all just 4 points apart! The fierce competition even saw last weeks winners Vodka Tartletts sit in the middle with 43 points.

Following up the rear was Morning Wood with a relaxed 26 points and we certainly enjoyed the irony presented by WINNER in ninth place with 29 points...

But ultimately, it was The Muff Rangers... Kyle Keller sleeps with Nicky Vee that sat on top as kings of trivia on the night, with a smashing 45 points...

They were rewarded with a rather impressive $50 bar tab. Well done lads!

Second place on the night was a heated contest between two teams following a tie on 44 points. Following sudden death, Team Ram-Rod were declared the official runners up with a $25 bar tab as a their prize!

Better luck next time It's a Mexican Love Fiesta in my Sweet Jean Shorts, who lost out in the sudden death tie breaker. Very interesting team name by the way!

The Parthenon is a temple on the Athenian Acropolis, Greece, dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their patron. Its construction began in 447 BC and was completed in 438 BC, although decorations of the Parthenon continued until 432 BC. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece. Its decorative sculptures are considered some of the high points of Greek art. The Parthenon is regarded as an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece and of Athenian democracy and one of the world's greatest cultural monuments.

The Parthenon itself replaced an older temple of Athena, which historians call the Pre-Parthenon or Older Parthenon, that was destroyed in the Persian invasion of 480 BC. Like most Greek temples, the Parthenon was used as a treasury. For a time, it served as the treasury of the Delian League, which later became the Athenian Empire. In the 5th century AD, the Parthenon was converted into a Christian church dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

After the Ottoman Turk conquest, it was turned into a mosque in the early 1460s, and it had a minaret built in it. On 26 September 1687, an Ottoman Turk ammunition dump inside the building was ignited by Venetian bombardment. The resulting explosion severely damaged the Parthenon and its sculptures. In 1806, Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin removed some of the surviving sculptures, with the Ottoman Turks' permission. These sculptures, now known as the Elgin Marbles or the Parthenon Marbles, were sold in 1816 to the British Museum in London, where they are now displayed. The Greek government is committed to the return of the sculptures to Greece, so far with no success.

It would appear most of Milwaukee flocked to Miller Park this week to watch the Brewers, as only a few teams participated at the Black Rose pub quiz this past Wednesday. It was a quiet one but we still had a decent handful of players with impressive brain power eager to win some tasty prizes!

Winners of a $50 bar tab was old Trinity players Vodka Tartletts. A crushing 58 points destroyed the opponents on the night...

This left second place to go to St. Anky's with a decent effort of 49 points...

The trio won a $25 bar tab for their quizzin' tekkers.

K2 is the second-highest mountain on Earth, after Mount Everest. With a peak elevation of 8,611 m (28,251 feet), K2 is part of the Karakoram Range, and is located on the border^[2] between Baltistan, in Gilgit-Baltistan of Pakistan-administered Kashmir and the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of Xinjiang, China. It is more hazardous to reach K2 from the Chinese side; thus, it is mostly climbed from the Pakistani side.

K2 is known as the Savage Mountain due to the difficulty of ascent and the second-highest fatality rate among the "eight thousanders" for those who climb it. For every four people who have reached the summit, one has died trying. Unlike Annapurna, the mountain with the highest fatality rate, K2 has never been climbed in winter.

A cracking night of trivia ensued at Black Rose this week, a new league opened up and we had a buzzing attendance to match the excitable atmosphere.

The final question in the quiz prompted patrons to reveal the name of the school for young wizard Harry Potter... Thus leading us to the discovery of quite an intriguing Harry Potter Tattoo!

He was a member of the winning team Chumba Wumba from Chamaica who dominated with 46 points!

The team's crushing score awarded them a $50 bar tab. Delish!

Runners up this time round was Running Jorts with a respectable 40 possible points out of 50...

Bösendorfer (L. Bösendorfer Klavierfabrik GmbH) is an Austrian piano manufacturer, now a wholly owned subsidiary of Yamaha. The brand is known for producing pianos with a uniquely rich, singing, and sustaining tone. Bösendorfer is unusual in that it produces 97- and 92-key models in addition to instruments with standard 88-key keyboards.

Bösendorfer, one of the oldest piano manufacturers, was established in 1828 by Ignaz Bösendorfer. From the outset, it has had a history of producing highly respected instruments; in 1830, it was granted the status of official piano maker to the Emperor of Austria. Ignaz's son Ludwig Bösendorfer (15 April 1835 – 9 May 1919) took over in 1859, operating from new premises from 1860. Aargh! The Quizmaster Pirate Cruise be just about a week away! Mateys be signin' up now, with only room for 150 pirates - 50 percent sold out already!....

At Black Rose this past Wednesday the 8 week trivia league came to a close, with a dramatic ending between two teams. Ultimately it was That Creepy, lone, mouthful of Jeremy's member that won the league with a overall score of 282 points....

They were delighted to beat their rivals by just ONE point. Yes just a single point after two months of play! They were rewarded with a $50 bar tab for the league win and for all the banterful and hilarious nights they have brought to Black Rose.

Falling short for the league by one point and coming in second place with an overall score of 281, was Chumba Wumba from Chamaica...

The team also finished second in the quiz on the night, bringing their prize total to two $25 bar tabs. Not bad!

Finally we had a $50 bar tab to give away for the quiz winners on the night, and it was deemed to be Running Jorts with a powerful 48 points on the night.

Was born in Brooklyn in 1899

Alphonse Gabriel "Al" Capone (January 17, 1899 – January 25, 1947) was an American gangster who led a Prohibition-era crime syndicate. The Chicago Outfit, which subsequently became known as the "Capones", was dedicated to smuggling and bootlegging liquor, and other illegal activities such as prostitution, in Chicago from the early 1920s to 1931.

Born in Brooklyn, New York to Italian immigrants, Capone became involved with gang activity at a young age after being expelled from school at age 14. In his early twenties, he moved to Chicago to take advantage of a new opportunity to make money smuggling illegal alcoholic beverages into the city during Prohibition. He also engaged in various other criminal activities, including bribery of government figures and prostitution. Despite his illegitimate occupation, Capone became a highly visible public figure. He made various charitable endeavors using the money he made from his activities, and was viewed by many to be a "modern-day Robin Hood".

Capone was publicly criticized for his involvement in the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre, when seven rival gang members were executed. Capone was convicted on federal charges of tax evasion, and sentenced to federal prison. His incarceration included a term at the new Alcatraz federal prison. In the final years of Capone's life, he suffered mental and physical deterioration due to late-stage neurosyphilis, which he had contracted as a youth. On January 25, 1947, he died from cardiac arrest after suffering a stroke.

Florence Nightingale OM, RRC (12 May 1820 – 13 August 1910) was a celebrated English nurse, writer and statistician. An Anglican, Nightingale believed that God had called her to be a nurse. She came to prominence for her pioneering work in nursing during the Crimean War, where she tended to wounded soldiers. She was dubbed "The Lady with the Lamp" after her habit of making rounds at night.

Florence Nightingale's most famous contribution came during the Crimean War, which became her central focus when reports began to filter back to Britain about the horrific conditions for the wounded. On 21 October 1854, she and a staff of 38 women volunteer nurses, trained by Nightingale and including her aunt Mai Smith, were sent (under the authorisation of Sidney Herbert) to the Ottoman Empire, about 295 nautical miles (546 km; 339 mi) across the Black Sea from Balaklava in the Crimea, where the main British camp was based.

Nightingale arrived early in November 1854 at Selimiye Barracks in Scutari (modern-day Üsküdar in Istanbul). She and her nurses found wounded soldiers being badly cared for by overworked medical staff in the face of official indifference. Medicines were in short supply, hygiene was being neglected, and mass infections were common, many of them fatal. There was no equipment to process food for the patients.

Nightingale laid the foundation of professional nursing with the establishment, in 1860, of her nursing school at St Thomas' Hospital in London, the first secular nursing school in the world, now part of King's College London. The Nightingale Pledge taken by new nurses was named in her honour, and the annual International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on her birthday.

In Greek mythology, Zeus is the "Father of Gods and men" who ruled the Olympians of Mount Olympus as a father ruled the family. He is the god of sky and thunder in Greek mythology. His Roman counterpart is Jupiter and his Etruscan counterpart is Tinia.

Zeus was the child of Cronus and Rhea, and the youngest of his siblings. Lindbergh, a 25-year-old U.S. Air Mail pilot, emerged from virtual obscurity to almost instantaneous world fame as the result of his Orteig Prize-winning solo non-stop flight on May 20–21, 1927, from Roosevelt Field located in Garden City on New York's Long Island to Le Bourget Field in Paris, France, a distance of nearly 3,600 statute miles (5,800 km), in the single-seat, single-engine monoplane Spirit of St. Louis. Lindbergh, a U.S. Army reserve officer, was also awarded the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his historic exploit.

In March 1932, however, his infant son, Charles, Jr., was kidnapped and murdered in what was soon dubbed the "Crime of the Century" which eventually led to the Lindbergh family fleeing the United States in December 1935 to live in Europe where they remained until the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by the Imperial Japanese Navy. Before the United States formally entered World War II by declaring war on Japan on December 8, 1941, Lindbergh had been an outspoken advocate of keeping the U.S. out of the world conflict, as was his Congressman father, Charles August Lindbergh (R-MN), during World War I, and became a leader of the anti-war America First movement. Nonetheless, he supported the war effort after Pearl Harbor and flew many combat missions in the Pacific Theater of World War II as a civilian consultant, even though President Franklin D. Roosevelt had refused to reinstate his Army Air Corps colonel's commission that he had resigned in April 1941.

It was a hot one this week at the Black Rose pub quiz as Milwaukee temperatures reached a massive 97 degrees. Although queeps did enjoy the delight of some air conditioning though, thank God.

Nine teams joined us at The Black Rose to compete in trivia for prizes and relish in the awesome drink specials.

There were high scores all round this week; maybe the questions were too easy? Or you people are just too damn smart? :)

Top dogs on the night were Mining for Ore in Jeremy's Dart Hole with a huge 49 points. The only point they failed to pick up was one of the answers in our weekly Soccer question. It was NORWAY! Not Brazil...

They were chuffed to bits to secure the $50 bar tab for their win.

Second place on the night went to It's hotter than my mother's crotch in here who took a $25 bar tab as their prize...

Good job people. Rarely does a 48 pointer come in second place. P.s. Bring your mother next week ;)

Quizmaster Sam stepped in at Black Rose this week to take over as it's new host. The delights of a young crowd definitely made it an eventful evening, with many jokes being exchanged throughout the night. 9pm struck and we were ready to kick of the quiz with 42 Milwaukee minds ready to compete for some prizes.

Top dogs on the night was Whoop whoop Jeremy's balls need shaving who managed to seal the win after a theatrical sudden death as they found themselves in a tie after six rounds of trivia. They took the $50 bar tab for their victory!

Nice hat mate.

Elsewhere on the night, the crowd seemed pleased with their new Quizmaster cracking down on cheating, even though there was a flaw in our darts question - as the pub has a dart board...

"Stop looking at the fucking dart board". Ha ha, well that was a free two points for everybody then.

And of course, everybody enjoyed our music clip this week - Jolene by Dolly Parton. A rare treat for country fans as it rarely features on Sam's iPod.

So following our sudden death, it was The Muff Rangers - Twats who were left with second place and a prize of a $25 bar tab. Good job fellas!

Quizmaster's favorite team name this week was most definitely The Jews who finished with 41 points, unfortunately there is no prize for best team name at Black Rose, but they got a hell of a laugh. Simple and hilarious.

Bhutan is a landlocked state in South Asia, located at the eastern end of the Himalayas and bordered to the south, east and west by the Republic of India and to the north by the People's Republic of China.

The state religion is Vajrayana Buddhism, and the population of 691,141 is predominantly Buddhist, with Hinduism the second-largest religion. The capital and largest city is Thimphu.

Quizmaster Ryan stepped in to host quiz at the Black Rose this Wednesday. And while a few regular were a "the fest," many were on the East Side for Wednesday night's premier trivia show.

And the foursome (giggity) of Jeremy, Why You No Call, We Make You Cum Long Time were pleased they stopped in, as they exited $50 better off after a glorious win...

They even rewarded the Quizmaster with a bright green (that's his color, too!) dirty girl scout shot! YUMMY!

Second place was more closely contested as the wits of Nelson Mandela's Illegitimate Children and E=MC Hammered were tested in a sudden death round, although the latter came out with the $25 tab in the end...

And that's how we do it!

The Spanish–American War was a conflict in 1898 between Spain and the United States. It ultimately ended with the Americans defeating the Spaniards. Revolts against Spanish rule had been endemic for decades in Cuba and were closely watched by Americans; there had been war scares before, as in the Virginius Affair in 1873. By 1897–98, American public opinion grew angrier at reports of Spanish atrocities. After the mysterious sinking of the American battleship Maine in Havana harbor, political pressures from the Democratic Party pushed the government of President William McKinley, a Republican, into a war McKinley had wished to avoid. Compromise proved impossible, resulting in an ultimatum sent to Madrid demanding it relinquish control of Cuba immediately, which was not accepted. First Madrid, then Washington, formally declared war.

Although the main issue was Cuban independence, the ten-week war was fought in both the Caribbean and the Pacific. A series of one-sided American naval and military victories followed on all fronts, owing to their numerical superiority in most of the battles and despite the good performance of some of the Spanish infantry units. The outcome was the 1898 Treaty of Paris—which was favorable to the U.S.—followed by temporary American control of Cuba and indefinite colonial authority over Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines. The defeat and subsequent end of the Spanish Empire was a profound shock for Spain's national psyche. The victor gained several island possessions spanning the globe and a rancorous new debate over the wisdom of imperialism.

Quiz League Concludes!!

It was quite a night at the Black Rose as the teams took a seat at the new bar! And by the way, it looks great! And as the teams settled in to their new surroundings, the quiz action was heating up for the League Finale. Would the Muff Rangers be able to hold on to their league lead? We would find out.

On the night, the team with a fondness for their favorite bartender Jeremy, would reign supreme with a final score of 46 out of 50 possible points...

Second place on the night would be decided by sudden death, as two teams were tied at 44 points. The Muff Rangers... Rubber Buns & Liquor and Banga Rang would battle it out to see who would take the nightly $25 gift card. The Question:

In which year was the first Father’s Day celebrated in Spokane, Washington?

Banga Rang would answer 1952, but would fall 5 years short to The Muff Rangers... with their answer of 1947, which was closest to the correct answer of 1910....

So with their extra 44 points, and keeping their league lead, The Muff Rangers would walk away with the top league honors as well, taking home a total of $75 in gift cards for the night! Congrats guys!

And in second place on the league, it was no surprise to hear the name Chumba Wumba from Chamaica. Their steady league play earned them a cool $25...

Goldfinger (1964) is the third spy film in the James Bond series, and the third to star Sean Connery as the fictional MI6 agent James Bond. It is based on the novel of the same name by Ian Fleming. Cluedo (Clue in North America) is a popular murder/mystery-themed deduction board game originally published by Waddingtons in Leeds, England in 1949. It was devised by Anthony E. Pratt, a solicitor's clerk from Birmingham, England. It is now published by the United States game and toy company Hasbro, which acquired its U.S. publisher Parker Brothers as well as Waddingtons.

The object of the basic game is for players to strategically move around the game board (a mansion), in the guise of one of the game's six characters, collecting clues from which to deduce which suspect murdered the game's perpetual victim: Dr. Black (Mr. Boddy in North American versions), and with which weapon and in what room.

Several games, books, and a film have been released as part of the Cluedo franchise. The board games form an overall story whose complete chronology can be found at Cluedo chronology. Overall, several spinoffs have been released, some featuring extra characters, and for some, different game play. More recent editions have restored the name, Tudor Mansion to the mansion, and say the mansion is located in Hampshire, England in the year 1926.

Who's going the distance?

On a stormy night at the Black Rose, nine teams would test their skill, and mainly stay dry while the storm brewed overhead. Our music clip on the night was Cake's The Distance. And two teams would prove they could go the distance, separating themselves from the rest of the pack. Incredibly, for the second week in a row, all of our teams were separated by just 10 points.

On the top of the table for the night, it was The Mutherfucking Best with their score of 44 points. Congrats on your $50 win!..

The Eiffel Tower (French: La Tour Eiffel, [tuʁ ɛfɛl], nickname La dame de fer, the iron lady) is a puddle iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris. Built in 1889, it has become both a global icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The tower is the tallest building in Paris^[10] and the most-visited paid monument in the world; millions of people ascend it every year. Named for its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair.

The tower stands 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-storey building. Upon its completion, it surpassed the Washington Monument to assume the title of tallest man-made structure in the world, a title it held for 41 years, until the Chrysler Building in New York City was built in 1930; however, due to the addition in 1957 of the antenna, the tower is now taller than the Chrysler Building. Not including broadcast antennas, it is the second-tallest structure in France after the 2004 Millau Viaduct.

The tower has three levels for visitors. Tickets can be purchased to ascend, by stairs or lift, to the first and second levels. It was a packed night at the Black Rose as some teams were cheering for the Brewers (who unfortunately could not beat the Reds two games in a row..) and others were cheering for Vancouver over Boston in the Stanley Cup Finals - all during the bar's weekly pub quiz. With all the sports going on, who knew that all the teams would be wind up scoring within 10 points of each other!

But the quiz crew were in for a real (or perhaps not-so-real) treat as a "real or fake boobs" question featured in the useless knowledge bonus round...

The answer were a) Real, b) Real, c) Fake, d) Fake, but really who cares! Boobies are boobies.

At the top of the table, it was the Muff Rangers and Mouthful of Jeremy that would battle it out to determine the $50 gift card winner. The question:

A total of how many diamonds are featured on the Imperial State Crown, the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom?

Mouthful of Jeremy answered 225, but would fall short to the Muff Rangers with their answer of 998, which was closest to the correct answer of 2868 diamonds!

Congrats to Muff Rangers for another win!...

Mouthful of Jeremy, who would walk away with the second prize of $25 on the night, kept true to their name in the photo (don't forget to cup the balls)...

Won gold medals in fencing in an
unprecedented six Olympic Games

Aladár Gerevich (16 March 1910 in Jászberény – 14 May 1991 in Budapest) was a fencer from Hungary, regarded as "the greatest Olympic swordsman ever". He won medals in sabre in six Olympics. With Birgit Fischer, Gerevich was one of only two athletes to do so. He is also the only athlete to win the same event six times (despite two games passed because of the Second World War). The War could not interfere with perhaps his most impressive record, however; he won gold medals in 1932 and 1960, an unprecedented 28 years apart.

Gerevich's wife, Erna Bogen (also known as Erna Bogathy), his son, Pal Gerevich, and his father-in-law, Albert Bogen, all received Olympic medals in fencing.

In the Hungarian Olympic trials for the 1960 Rome Olympics, the fencing committee told Gerevich that he was too old to compete. He silenced them by challenging the entire sabre team to individual matches and winning every match. He missed the finals of the 1960 Olympic individual sabre event, and a possible individual gold medal, by a single touch. He died in Budapest.

It was a crowded night this Wednesday at the Black Rose pub quiz. There was a full back bar and the front bar was pretty packed as well. And the teams that competed would have a challenge on their hands, with a very difficult quiz on the night. Only one team would crack the 40 point barrier on the night. The Muff Rangers would take the top spot and the $50 top prize...

The Rudolph Wurlitzer Company, usually referred to simply as Wurlitzer, was an American company that produced stringed instruments, woodwinds, brass instruments, theatre organs, band organs, orchestrions, electronic organs, electric pianos and jukeboxes.

Over time Wurlitzer changed to producing only organs and jukeboxes, but it no longer produces either. Deutsche Wurlitzer, owner of the Wurlitzer Jukebox and Vending Electronics trademark, was acquired by the Gibson Guitar Corporation.

The firm's violin department, independently directed by Rembert Wurlitzer (1904–63) from 1949, became a leading international center for rare string instruments.

Wurlitzer was an American firm of instrument makers and dealers. Started in Cincinnati in 1853 by Franz Rudolph Wurlitzer (1831–1914), it was directed successively by his three sons until 1941, when it moved to Chicago. From importing musical instruments it turned in the 1880s to marketing automated instruments, including disc-changer machines and coin-operated pianos. The "Mighty Wurlitzer" theatre organ was introduced in 1910, followed by the successful coin-operated phonograph, or juke-box (1934–74). In 1909 the company began making harps that were far more durable than European prototypes, and from 1924 to the 1930s eight acclaimed models were available. The firm's violin department, independently directed by Rembert Wurlitzer (1904–63) from 1949, became a leading international centre for rare string instruments. Trivia League Rolls On!

It was a busy night last night as finals were wrapping up for the UWM crowd. But who would show up to trivia, the exhausted student or the prepared? In the end, it appeared that our teams were well prepared as 7 out of 16 teams would score 40 points or better.

At the top of the table two teams would be forced to duke it out in sudden death to determine our first and second place winners. The question to separate them?

In which year did the original Space Mountain roller coaster open at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World?

The correct answer was 1975, coincidentally the exact number that The Muff Rangers guessed!...

Great guess!

As for Da Rusky F's, they would not go home empty handed. They would take the $25 second place gift card on the night....

Halley's Comet or Comet Halley (officially designated 1P/Halley)^[ is the best-known of the short-period comets, and is visible from Earth every 75 to 76 years. Halley is the only short-period comet that is clearly visible to the naked eye from Earth, and thus the only naked-eye comet that might appear twice in a human lifetime.^[ Other naked-eye comets may be brighter and more spectacular, but will appear only once in thousands of years.

Halley's returns to the inner solar system have been observed and recorded by astronomers since at least 240 BC, and perhaps as early as 466 BC. Clear records of the comet's appearances were made by Chinese, Babylonian, and medieval European chroniclers, but were not recognized as reappearances of the same object at the time. The comet's periodicity was first determined in 1705 by English astronomer Edmond Halley, after whom it is now named. Halley's Comet last appeared in the inner Solar System in 1986 and will next appear in mid-2061.

With the warmer temperatures this Wednesday night, there were a few missing teams during pub quiz at the Black Rose, but there was some stiff competition at the top of the table anyway!

Three teams were tied in first place at the end of the quiz with 44 points, so a sudden death question would determine their fate. The question:

What price did the New York Yankees pay the Boston Box Red Sox to obtain future Hall of Famer Babe Ruth in 1920?

Muff Rangers, who wanted to remind the ladies to trim the hedges, answered $150, which was a bit low, even for 1920 standards. In second place, taking home a $25 Black Rose gift card for their effort, it was The Alex Trebek's Bastard Children Foundation with their answer of $5,000...

And the team closest to the correct answer of $125,000 was the team known for their gentlemanly ways, I'll ease it in.. like a gentleman who answered $40,000...

Progressive Party of 1912
Founded by former President Theodore Roosevelt,
it became best known as the Bull Moose Party

The Progressive Party of 1912 was an American political party. It was formed after a split in the Republican Party between President William Howard Taft and former President Theodore Roosevelt.

The party also became known as the Bull Moose Party when former President Roosevelt boasted "I'm fit as a bull moose," after being shot in an assassination attempt prior to his 1912 campaign speech in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Inspiration for the party's beginnings may have come from Roosevelt's friend and supporter, U.S. Senator Thomas Kearns of Utah, who in October of 1906 broke off from the Republican Party and started the American Party in that state. This was a direct response to LDS Church leadership influence on the Senatorial elections between 1902 to 1905.

Roosevelt retired as President in 1908. He had selected Taft, his Secretary of War to succeed him, and Taft easily won the 1908 presidential election. Roosevelt became disappointed by Taft's increasingly conservative policies. Taft alienated Roosevelt when he moved to break up U.S. Steel through the use of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. During his own presidency, Roosevelt had approved J.P. Morgan-owned U.S. Steel as a "good" trust ^[2] By 1912, the two were openly hostile, and Roosevelt decided to seek the presidency.

Taft was already being challenged by Senator Robert La Follette of Wisconsin, but Roosevelt jumped in late (much to La Follette's annoyance).

Roosevelt far outpolled Taft in the primaries. But Taft controlled the party organization and the convention, which renominated him in June.^[3] Before the final vote, Roosevelt had said he would accept nomination from a new "honestly elected" convention. He ordered his delegates to abstain from voting in rebuke of Taft's "steamroller tactics". The next day, they met to form a new party.

Dick. Microphone. What's the Difference! New League Underway

There was a bit of a late start to quiz night this Wednesday at the Black Rose as the pub was finishing up a party, but at 9:30 trivia did get underway! As we say, the show must go on!

And in the top spot on the night, it was the lads and ladies from Muff Rangers who would take the $50 gift card last night...

Apparently they thought the picture on the answer sheet looked like the QM was holding a dick?

As for the second place prize, it was The angle of my dangle is inversely proportional to the heat of my meat...

That's a good equation to remember! Give us a minute to digest it!

Thanks to all the teams that came out, and especially the group of guys that were falling down drunk as they started their Cinco De Mayo celebration a bit earlier than the rest of the bar (or the world). But hey, there's nothing wrong with doing a little extra credit!

Also, a new quiz league got underway on the evening, set to run for an 8-week spell. Teams are asked to keep a consistent team name throughout if they want the Quizmaster to track their scores for the league table!

the existing wall was built during the Ming Dynasty.

The Great Wall of China is a series of stone and earthen fortifications in northern China, built originally to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire against intrusions by various nomadic groups. Several walls have been built since the 5th century BC that are referred to collectively as the Great Wall, which has been rebuilt and maintained from the 5th century BC through the 16th century. One of the most famous is the wall built between 220–206 BC by the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. Little of that wall remains; the majority of the existing wall was built during the Ming Dynasty.

The Great Wall stretches from Shanhaiguan in the east, to Lop Nur in the west, along an arc that roughly delineates the southern edge of Inner Mongolia. The most comprehensive archaeological survey, using advanced technologies, has concluded that the entire Great Wall, with all of its branches, stretches for 8,851.8 km (5,500.3 mi). This is made up of 6,259.6 km (3,889.5 mi) sections of actual wall, 359.7 km (223.5 mi) of trenches and 2,232.5 km (1,387.2 mi) of natural defensive barriers such as hills and rivers.

It's League Finale Time!

There was a quiet start to the night's quiz last night at the Black Rose, but as the quiz rolled on, the action started to heat up as it was the trivia league finale too!

But this particular quiz was easy for one team on the night who came one point away from a perfect score! In first place on the evening it was I jizzed on your girl's face, check her cumplexion...

They only missed the Aerosmith picture question with an answer of "Who the fuck knows!"

Second place on the night would be a bit closer as just one point separated The Muff Rangers from the rest of the pack...

The other drama on the night, turned into not too much drama after all as Chumba Wumba from Chamaica took the top league prize of $50!...

Congrats folks!

And for the second time last night, in second place in the league it was The Muff Rangers who took another $25 gift card for a total winning of $50 on the night! So to sum it up, each of our winning teams took home $50 in Black Rose gift cards last night! Enjoy it!
